The Research and Innovation EXPO 2025 highlighted the strength and diversity of Malta’s research community, showcasing more than 35 completed projects funded through Xjenza Malta. Researchers, students, and stakeholders convened to explore work spanning sustainability, health and wellbeing, engineering, ICT, and the blue and green economy.
Held in collaboration with Esplora, the Interactive Science Centre, the EXPO placed strong emphasis on public engagement and knowledge-sharing. The morning session welcomed secondary and post-secondary students, offering them hands-on opportunities to interact with researchers and understand how academic research translates into real-world impact.
During the opening of the press conference, the Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, underscored the need for closer links between research, society, and the economy. He highlighted Malta’s commitment to empowering researchers, nurturing young talent, and supporting innovation with tangible societal value.
The programme also featured a panel discussion on transforming innovative research into commercialisation and broader social benefits, bringing together representatives from academia, industry, and government. Ing. Michelle Cortis, Administrative Director of the University's Corporate Research & Knowledge Transfer Office, was part of the panel.
A documentary film premiered during the event, presenting the stories and impact of more than 35 research projects funded through ten Xjenza Malta programmes, emphasising the breadth and relevance of university-led research in Malta.
This year’s EXPO introduced the first Excellence Awards for Research and Innovation, recognising four exceptional contributions. Presenting the awards, Xjenza Malta CEO Silvio Scerri highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation in driving Malta’s research landscape forward.
The EXPO reaffirmed Xjenza Malta’s mission, shared across Malta’s universities and research institutions, to strengthen a national culture of research, innovation, and public engagement.
