Become part of a unique experience!
Valletta 2018 is currently inviting artists, NGOs, cultural associations, performers, musicians, choirs, storytellers and citizens from different backgrounds to work with local and international artists to expand their own creativity and talents by taking part in one of Valletta 2018’s biggest participatory projects for the European Capital of Culture year, Orfeo and Majnun.
This interdisciplinary, participatory music-theatre project which includes workshops, a parade and an opera in 2018 combines two myths from different cultures – the Greek myth of Orfeo and Eurydice and the Middle Eastern legend of Leyla and Majnun. A theatre of emotions about love, loss and longing and the power of music, this production uses multiple textures, including shadow puppet theatre, to express a new take on these well-known tales.
Following info sessions, workshops will be organised, in which students, choirs, musicians, artists and people from all walks of life, can collaborate and co-create. Under the guidance of the artistic team, participants will choose the artistic fields they would like to work in and, with the support of local and international artists, they will develop their own interpretations of the themes of love and longing. The results of this will include the creation of theatrical scenes, dances, songs, sketches, shadow puppetry, films, amongst others, which will be presented together as the first part of the Orfeo and Majnun project. Workshops will be given by international professionals such as Airan Berg (Theatre), Martina Winkel (Theatre, Writing and Shadow Puppetry) and Daan Milius (Film Making and Video).
Find out how you can contribute by attending one of the info sessions listed below. Info sessions will be in English. Those interested in attending are to send an e-mail to orfeoandmajnun@valletta2018.org by Thursday 22 June, stating which info session they would like to attend.
