Venue: Majjistral Park Visitor Centre
Did you know that Malta is surrounded by breeding seabirds? Gulls are often seen circling over our islands but there are other seabirds that spend their time at open sea and only visit the land at night.
The Yelkouan Shearwater (Garnija in Maltese) is one of these seabirds! This species can only be seen in the Mediterranean Basin and 10% of its global population breeds in the Maltese Islands. We are lucky to have one of the major colonies of the Yelkouan Shearwater on the coast of Il-Majjistral Nature & History Park.
We are holding an event in collaboration with Birdlife Malta involving a short informative talk about this special species and the ‘LIFE Arċipelagu Garnija’ project. We will then visit a Yelkouan Shearwater colony to experience the eerie calls of incoming birds.
The schedule is:
17:00: Meet at Majjistral Nature & History Park Visitors Centre
17:00 - 17:40: Opening talk and discussion about the project and the species (40 min)
17:40 - 18:00: Leave Visitors Centre for Popeye Village (carpooling, 20 min)
18:00 - 18:15: Leave Popeye Village car park and walk to the cliffs (15 min)
18:15 - 20:00: Listening to the calls and discussing shearwaters
Join us to discover the secretive life of this species and to see what you can do to help them sustain their populations around the Maltese Islands!
