The Community Engagement Sub-Committee of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing is organising a conference in collaboration with JRS. The Conference will be held on Tuesday 14 November at 09:00 at the Aula Magna, University of Malta, Valletta Campus.
The half day conference entitled 'Beyond Refuge: Integration of Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Maltese Society', aims to provide an academic arena where the social integration of refugees and asylum seekers in Malta and related challenges can be discussed and analysed in detail.
The Conference will focus on unpacking the concept of integration that, as literature points out is a vague and chaotic one (Robinson, 1998), as well as exploring the complexity and intricacies of the integration process and what it means for refugees communities. Furthermore, it will serve to delineate the current state of affairs regarding the adaptation process of different groups of refugees and asylum seekers and what the current structural and sociological barriers to successful integration are, as well as discussing a vision for successful social integration in Malta.
In conclusion the Conference will explore how the Faculty of Social Wellbeing can strive to train professionals who are adept at working with refugees and asylum seekers and acting as proactive agents of the integration process.
