Description
In a period of global upheaval sometimes characterised as an Era of Uncertainty, over-looked public statues, silently occupying the city square or plaza have been making headlines. The site of nationalist rallying cries and demonstrations of democratic discontent the memorial monument is being pressed into service for social change becoming, some not for the first time, representative of inequalities and injustice. Pam Meecham's talk will consider historic and contemporary engagement with statues and monuments to ask what is at stake in the interventions, removal and repurposing of statues in public places. It considers what kind of artworks might be needed in the future for cultures in transition.
