Title: Crises & Migration
Date: Tuesday 18 May
Time: 17:30 - 18:30
Venue: Online (via Zoom)
The University of Malta Platform for Migration aims to offer a dialogical space in which researchers from different academic disciplines can work towards understanding all the evolving aspects of international migration, including that of belonging across generations. Accordingly, the Platform will be hosting its first online event, focussing on the topic of Crises & Migration, which is open to all individuals with an interest in migration-related research.
This upcoming workshop will include presentations by two members of the Platform for Migration, based on recent research that focuses on migration. Dr Omar Grech will present findings from a study which investigated the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on migration. Dr Rose Marie Azzopardi will also discuss preliminary findings from a study on Recent Migration and Skills. The workshop will also provide time for discussion of the presentations.
The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted migration, with many migrants playing a vital role in the European Union's response to COVID-19, whilst also facing disproportionate risks (European Commission, 2021). Migration flows and asylum applications have decreased, and variations in border crossings have become evident. Solidarity, coupled with empirical research, has been crucial in managing the pandemic, and will continue to be important for the management of migration in a humane manner.
This event is going to be held online via Zoom, on Tuesday 18 May 2021 between 17:30 and 18:30.
