The International Institute for Baroque Studies at the University of Malta will be organising a series of four interesting lectures on the Neapolitan Baroque Heritage. These lectures will be conducted by Dr Simona Rossi, a graduate of the University of Naples Federico II and a researcher in the field. Ms Cetty Parisi, a warranted restorer, will contribute to the seminars.
According to Prof. Denis De Lucca, the director of the Institute, the aim of these lectures is to provide a comprehensive overview of the main aspects of the Baroque age in Naples, along with the socio-political context that influenced its development. Each of the four lectures will be dedicated to exploring a specific topic.
The first two lectures will focus on exploring the distinctive features of Neapolitan Baroque, with a particular emphasis on Palace and Church architecture. These sessions will delve into the unique architectural and artistic characteristics of these buildings, stressing the powerful integrative attitude of their designers to the visual arts: architecture, sculpture and painting.
The third lecture will delve into the principal innovations in Theatre design and Scenography during the Baroque age. In this context, it will discuss the perception of space and the utilisation of new machine in theatrical settings. This lecture will also examine the skilful use of stucco in Baroque art and architecture, highlighting past practices in antique restoration interventions.
The final lecture will focus on the concept of space in the Baroque age, shedding light on significant urban interventions that transformed the urban landscape of the city of Naples. The interplay between sculpture, light, and architecture, which contributed to the grandeur of Neapolitan Baroque Architecture, will be a key theme that will be discussed in this session.
According to Dr Hermann Bonnici of the International Institute for Baroque Studies who is coordinating this event, all the lectures which will begin at 18:00, will take place on 12, 19, 26, and 30 June 2023 at the Attard Parish Centre, Triq il-Kbira, Attard.
