Critical Education in International Perspective, by Peter Mayo and Paolo Vittorio, presents new perspectives on critical education from Latin America, Southern Europe and Africa. While recognising the valuable work in critical education emerging from North America and the Northern hemisphere, testimony to Paulo Freire's influence there, this book sheds light on parts of the world that are not given prominence. The book highlights the complementary work of Lorenzo Milani, Amilcar Cabral, exponents of Italian feminism, Ada Gobetti, the Landless Workers Movement (MST) in Brazil, Antonio Gramsci, Gabriela Mistral and Julius Nyerere. It also focuses on a range of struggles such as education in the context of landlessness, independence, renewal and cognitive justice, social creation and against neoliberalism and decolonisation.

Paolo Vittoria from University of Naples Federico II and Peter Mayo present their book Critical Education in International Perspective at the Kunst Universität Vienna. The publishers Bloomsbury Academic decided to release the book also in paperback. They are there primarily to participate in a PhD thesis examination with Paolo Vittoria as Examiner and Peter Mayo as co-supervisor.
As far as Prof. Mayo is concerned, this is his 24th book mostly published by well known International publishing houses only 8 of which are edited. Paolo Vittoria has published a book on Freire translated from its original in Italian into several languages including Portuguese, English and Romanian. He also wrote another book on Freire and Augusto Boal and with Antonio Vigilante, a book on Freire, Boal, Dolci, and Capitini published by Frosone. He writes regularly on education, social activism and cultural politics for Il Manifesto.
This jointly authored book provides a perspective on critical education which extends well beyond the Eurocentric framework highlighting the work of, apart from the usual Gramsci and Freire, Ada Gobetti, Gabriela Mistral, Italian feminism of difference, Julius Nyerere, Amilcar Cabral and the Movement of Landless Peasants in Brazil. It has been heralded as breaking new ground for Critical Pedagogy and has been endorsed by Joao Paraskeva in the Preface and sociologists, Raewyn Connell, Donatella Della Porta, Marta Soler and Charles L. Lowery in the backcover blurbs.
Copies can be ordered directly from Bloomsbury Academic.
Peter Mayo and Paolo Vittoria are also co-authors of Saggi di Pedagogia Critica. Oltre il Neoliberismo. Analizzando Educatori, Lotte e Movimenti Sociali, published by Societa' Editrice Fiorentina in 2017.
