The European Commission Representation in Malta launched TraTra, a translation summer school for teenagers aimed at acquainting sixth-form students with the translation profession.
David Schembri (Language Officer, European Commission) coordinated the programme that included talks by Antoine Cassar (Maltese poet and translator) who discussed the nuances of the language when translating poetry; Dr Claudine Borg (University of Malta) who introduced the Masters in Translation courses and Luisa Castorina (AVTMA) who delivered a talk about the importance of audiovisual translation in Malta.
Students were also provided with the opportunity to try translation for themselves by working on a short text.
Dr Patricia Vella Briffa and Dr David Aloisio (Junior College) were course tutors.
TraTra was held at Dar l-Ewropa, Valletta and is part of the European Commission’s Translating Europe Workshops series, run by its Directorate-General for Translation (DGT), which aims to raise the profile and develop the translation profession within the European Union.
