Following the successful introduction of The Daily Mile at the University of Malta, we are excited to extend this initiative to Junior College staff, starting Monday 9 February.
Staff are invited to join short, friendly walks of around 15–20 minutes, on any day that suits them. The Football Ground will be open at 7.30 am and again at 12:30 pm, where Norbert Borg/Karl Cortis will be available to meet participants and explain the initiative further. Staff members who wish to walk at other times are also welcome to do so.
The Daily Mile is a simple yet powerful way to integrate movement into the working day. By walking together, staff can improve their physical health, enhance mental well-being, and strengthen social connections, all without changing clothes or disrupting their schedule. Research shows that The Daily Mile contributes to improved fitness, mood, and concentration, supporting a more productive and positive work environment.
Introducing the initiative, Prof. Andrew Decelis, who brought The Daily Mile to UM, highlighted its simplicity and impact:
“The beauty of The Daily Mile is how simple it is. Just 15 to 20 minutes of walking during a break can make a real difference, physically, mentally, and in how productive we feel afterwards. It’s an easy opportunity to step away from the desk, clear your head, and come back refreshed, all while sharing the experience with colleagues.”
The value of The Daily Mile has been echoed by its founder in Scotland, Elaine Wyllie: “For students and staff alike, the Daily Mile is a sociable and simple way of staying fit and connected.”
UM Staff who have already taken part at UM have shared positive experiences:
“The Daily Mile has become a little daily routine I really enjoy. It helps me both physically and mentally, connecting with colleagues in a simple, easy way. I feel more positive afterwards, every time. I believe more workplaces could benefit from this initiative :)”, said Michaela Stivala.
“Thank you for this initiative. I’ve often found it difficult to break away for a walk—work and other commitments tend to take over the day. Knowing that the Mile Club meets daily at a fixed time makes it much easier to participate, and it creates a healthy sense of routine", said Gilbert Zahra.
“Participating in The Daily Mile has been a nice break in my day. The walks helped me clear my mind, feel more energised, and connect with other colleagues. I really enjoyed the initiative and would definitely recommend it to others”, said Romina.
This initiative is organised by the Junior College Sports & Leisure Unit, in collaboration with the UM Sport Development Office and the Office for Human Resource Management & Development, and is based on feedback from the UNI-PAS staff survey. It is the first of many activities planned to promote staff wellness at UM.
Staff members are encouraged to express their interest and share any suggestions or queries related to sport and physical activity by filling in the Google Form—it only takes 2 minutes.
We look forward to seeing you walking with us.
