The role of generative artificial intelligence in journalism was the focus of a talk by distinguished Professor of Journalism Michael J. Bugeja at the Aula Prima of the Valletta Campus on 20 November, 2025.
Particular attention was paid to the challenges posed by AI to the profession in contemporary times, especially regarding their impact on journalistic ethics, professional considerations, and human conscience.
The event was hosted by the Department of Media and Communications within the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences. Professor Ġorġ Mallia, Head of Department, led a discussion on the disruptions brought by generative AI to the industry and the prospects for journalism students entering the field in the near future. Along with Professor Bugeja, Professor Carmen Sammut, Dr Nicole Talmacs, and Professor Alex Grech from the Department also participated in the discussion.
Professor Michael J. Bugeja was invited by the University of Malta as part of the Honoris Causa ceremony, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of his role as an extraordinary scholar and esteemed media ethicist. His distinguished career spans half a century devoted to journalism education. He has authored 25 books, received prestigious awards for his contributions to media ethics research, and is a frequent contributor to prominent higher education journals as well as mainstream media outlets.
