Do it To Learn It (Episode 2 now online)

As the saying goes, “you’ve got to do it to learn it” - a reminder that practical experience is just as vital to understanding a concept as theoretical knowledge. This philosophy of active learning, which places hands-on experience at the heart of mastering a skill, lies at the core of the University of Malta’s approach to teaching and learning.

Across its programmes, the University places strong emphasis on practical components, ensuring that students are not only taught concepts but are given the opportunity to apply them in real, meaningful contexts. Through experimentation, practice and reflection, students develop the skills and confidence needed to progress both academically and professionally.

Do It to Learn It is a new social media series that shines a spotlight on students from different faculties, institutes and schools across the University of Malta. The series showcases the breadth of study options available at UM while offering a behind-the-scenes look at the hands-on side of its courses. By following students in their practical element, the series highlights how experiential learning helps them grow, explore ideas and prepare for what comes next.

The first episode features Gaia and Carolin, students from the Department of Art and Art History within the Faculty of Arts, who share insights into their creative practice at UM and reflect on how hands-on learning shapes their artistic development.

The second episode features Luke, a fourth-year student from the Department of Occupational Therapy within the Faculty of Health Sciences, who talks about how important it is to apply what he learned in his earlier university years by doing therapy sessions in school settings, health clinics and the hospital with children, adults and the elderly.
