Modern technical systems, processes and devices are becoming evermore smart and complex. Advances in engineering, computing, artificial intelligence and communications have opened up new possibilities for myriads of devices to exchange information, cooperate and perform complex tasks autonomously. This is leading to advanced systems and innovative applications such as driverless vehicles, robotic systems, sophisticated biomedical equipment, machine vision, cyber-physical systems and automation.
The key for creating such exciting systems and handling reliably their complexity, is through an approach that integrates systemically the basic building blocks underpinning such design. This is the overall objective of the MSc course in Signals, Systems and Control offered by the Department of Systems and Control Engineering: to provide the academic, practical and professional competencies and technical skills on signal processing, systems engineering, machine learning and automatic control, and to show how these could be integrated together to implement smarter systems, processes and devices.
The course may be taken on a full-time or a part-time (day course) basis. The course duration is one complete calendar year if taken full-time or three years part-time. The first two-thirds of the course consists of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. This is then followed by a research project under the supervision of academic staff, that also requires submission of an M.Sc. dissertation that reports on the work carried out in the project.
