Olive oil is considered as one of the important markers of Mediterranean culinary identity. This was celebrated between the 25 and 26 October when a number of University of Malta Students and Staff had a first-hand experience of hand-picking olives. In the shade of olive trees situated on university grounds, participants also had the opportunity to learn about the product, the process and its association with Malta’s culinary past.
During the event, a thousand kilos of olives were collected from the Sports Complex area, resulting into 140 liters of olive oil. Special thanks to Chaplaincy for supporting this initiative wholeheartedly. Thanks also to BSS Ltd for pressing the olives at no expense.
The olive oil is now going through a process of decantation and will be available for sale during the Christmas on Campus period. All proceeds will be donated to L-Istrina.
