A multidimensional, user-driven international ranking of higher education institutions, U-Multirank, has rated the University of Malta highly in terms of its timely graduation for its undergraduate programmes, its number of international joint publications, international orientation efforts and research & knowledge transfer.
The latest ranking is based on 2018 data – and it is the University of Malta’s sixth consecutive participation in this ranking exercise.

Following up on the positive trend of past participation, UM has retained the top rank with respect to timely graduation for its undergraduate programmes. Another achievement of note is the sixth consecutive percentage increase in the number of international joint publications.
Funded by the European Commission, U-Multirank ranks universities on a like-with-like basis by scoring the institutions’ results into one of five tiers, namely teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer, international orientation and regional engagement.
A number of encouraging improvements were also noted in other areas. UM recorded its best result over six years with respect to interdisciplinary publications and co-publications with industrial partners, and secured the second-tier classification for the number of open access publications.
Excellent results were also secured in the ‘International Orientation’ category, with top ranks achieved in relation to the provision of foreign language programs and the number of international academic staff, as well as UM’s best score to-date as regards international doctorate degrees.
Several scores in the ‘Research’ and ‘Knowledge Transfer’ categories were largely retained for a number of indicators, including for citation rates, external research income, art-related output, post-doc positions, income from private sources, patents awarded, publications cited in patents, and income from continuous professional development.
