Following the 4th edition of the Malta Historical Society (MHS) Publication Awards held online in December 2020, MHS President Dr Theresa Vella presented the awards to the respective winners in a ceremony held on 12 February 2021 at the University of Malta.
After a brief address and note of thanks hailing the winners' contributions, Dr Vella presented Dr Emanuel Buttigieg and Mr Christian Mifsud with the money prize allocated to each of the categories, and a specially-designed trophy (by Walter Vella). Dr Buttigieg is Senior Lecturer in early modern history at the Department of History, while Mr Mifsud is a doctoral student at the Institute of Baroque Studies.
Dr Buttigieg won the 'Established Authors' category is with 'Corpi e anime in schiavitù: schiavi musulmani nella Malta dei Cavalieri di San Giovanni (1530-1798)', Studia Borromaica: Schiavitù del corpo e schiavitù dell’anima. Chiesa, potere politico e schiavitù tra Atlantico e Mediterraneo, 2018.
Mr Christian Mifsud won the 'Emerging Authors' category with '‘Per servitio di questi populi...’ The development of Valletta’s market place: a study of the evolution of the socio-spatial dialectic between the XVIth and the XIXth centuries', Journal of Baroque Studies, 2019.
