The University of Malta Ġ.F. Abela Junior College is currently celebrating its first 25 years of service since its foundation, and to mark this important milestone, on Monday 19 July 2021, it launched a commemorative silver coin in collaboration with the Malta Coin Centre at the Central Bank of Malta.
The coin was designed and minted at the Royal Dutch Mint. The obverse of the coins features the coat of arms of Malta. The reverse shows the facade of the Gian Frangisk Abela Junior College.
The Gian Frangisk Abela Junior College officially opened its doors for the first time on 1st October 1995. It occupies an impressive building and surrounding grounds designed by Victor Anastasi. The building, which was originally known as the Polytechnic in Msida, was planned and constructed during 1962-1966.
Unveiling the design of the commemorative coin at the Junior College premises in Msida, third consecutive term JC Principal, Mr Paul Xuereb, said this momentous occasion is a sign that the college has been an instrumental part of the lives of many of those who came into contact with it, passed through its doors and made it their second home throughout these past 25 years.
“This is a special year for the College. We want everyone, including all those currently enrolled at JC, to be part of this achievement and successful story”, he said.
University of Malta Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella, expressed his satisfaction at seeing the Junior College grow so much in such a relatively short period of time. “The teaching staff and administration are doing an excellent job at preparing pre-tertiary students for the next step in their academic journey. The study programmes offered and the total learning experience do not just gear up the students academically but also helps them grow as individuals. This coin is commemorative of that growth, literal and metaphorical, and signifies the success of our Junior College and augurs well for the years to come”, he said.
The coins will shortly be available for sale from the Junior College, Msida, for the price of €64.99 each (inc. VAT). Further enquiries can be made through 25907201, or via email.
