66 PhD graduates, of whom 40 are women,
and 1,477 Master graduates, of whom 912 are women – are gracing the streets of
our capital city throughout the month of March, and the University of Malta has
taken the opportunity to express its gratitude to the women who paved the way.
Launching its latest video on
International Women’s Day, titled ‘With gratitude to the women who paved the
way’, the University is reiterating the importance of recognising the women who
made a difference in our lives.
The University also wanted to highlight
its rich history, with special recognition to Tessie Camilleri, the
University’s first female graduate in 1922, Blanche Hubert, who enrolled into a
Medicine course with Tessie, as well as Lucia Levanzin, who studied for a
diploma in midwifery, who paved the way for more women to pursue their love for
learning.
By featuring four of the 40 female PhD
/ Pharm D. graduates from the Friday 1 March ceremony; namely Dr Audrey Friggieri,
Dr Amy Camilleri Zahra, Dr Anne Marie Agius and Dr Elvira Psaila, the video is
ultimately honouring the efforts of all those who are paving the way for future
generations to pursue tertiary education.
“The positive message we are trying to
convey is simple – we are grateful to the women who fought hard for us to be
able to have the opportunities we may possibly take for granted today. As
a University, we fully embrace equity and support the members of our
community to advance in their academic and private lives as well,” said Ms Nadia
Abdilla, UM's Equity Coordinator.
On this International Women’s Day, we thank the women who paved the way and who have been a true inspiration.
