The University’s rugby club – UM Wolves RFC – triumphed earlier this month to secure the MRFU Prestige Cup, tying up a historic double where the club also won the league championship for the first time ever.
Buoyed by the support of over 200 people, the club’s men’s team ran out as 26-8 winners over a resilient Stompers team.
Tries from Malta international Philippe Ioffe, club top scorer Axel Jeffers, and Keegan Weintraud together with 11 points kicked through by Connor Muir were enough to secure a fantastic victory.
With close to two-thirds of the matchday squad being homegrown by the club and almost half being University students or alumni, the victory is a testament to the philosophy that the club has harboured since it was established in 2017.
Jubilant celebrations followed the full-time whistle, culminating in the team being presented with the MRFU Prestige Cup trophy and the Malta Rugby Championship league trophy at one go by officials from the Malta Rugby Football Union.
The club has already secured the league title even though two matches are still to be played – and it has been an historic unbeaten season for them thus far in what is just the fourth year that the club has competed in Malta’s top domestic rugby level.
