On 5 May, we joined the global celebration of the International Day of the Midwife. This year’s theme, Midwives – Critical in Every Crisis, honours the vital role midwives play—whether during pandemics, natural disasters, conflicts, or overwhelmed health systems.
From traditional caregivers guided by folklore to today’s autonomous, evidence-based professionals, midwifery has evolved dramatically. Though old beliefs once shaped practice—like heartburn during pregnancy meant a baby would be born with a full head of hair—one truth has endured: midwives have always cared, protected, and empowered women and babies.
Today, midwives are highly trained, research-informed professionals providing compassionate, skilled care when it matters most.
