The University of Malta Gozo Campus has just issued the 32nd edition of The Gozo Observer. This publication is once again presenting a number of interesting articles relating to Gozo.
In his editorial Professor Maurice Cauchi discusses the implications of the setting up of a medical school in Gozo.
In his article, 'The Practice of Medicine in Gozo 200 Years Ago, Dr Mario Saliba MD gives an interesting review of a manuscript written by a practicing barber-surgeon named Calcedonio Speranza, also giving an interesting historical background of Gozo during the same period. Dr Charles A. Gauci describes in detail the remarkable career of Maestro Vincenzo Caruana Spiteri, an educator and renowned musician and composer who hailed from Luqa and who lived and worked the last years of his short life in Ta’ Sannat. This article particularly relates to the contribution of this Maestro to this small village in Gozo.
The lures and attractions of another popular Gozitan village are highlighted in an article simply entitled 'Għarb' written by the mayor of the same village, David Apap. This village also has particular connections with the Turkish raids and incursions in Gozo. This historical facet is treated by Anton F. Attard in his article ‘The Lore of Turkish Raids in Gozo’, also including an interesting naration of the Siege of Gozo in 1551.
Dr Consiglia Azzopardi, coordinator of the Lace-Making Programme at the University of Malta Gozo Campus, provides details about Lace Day 2015, an important anual activity which has become established within the UGCs calendar of events.
