The 2016 Environment-Material Interaction (ENVIMAT) International Summer School was hosted at the University of Malta’s Valletta campus between 12 and 14 July, on the theme of preventive conservation of monuments and archaeological sites in the Mediterranean Basin.
Students of 15 different nationalities from across four continents participated in three intensive days of lectures, hands-on workshops, and on-site discussion, which focused on the interaction between environment and materials, and particularly the effects of climate change, and their implications for the conservation of cultural heritage.
The school was led by eight lecturers from five different universities and research institutions in Italy, Hungary and Hong Kong, as well as the University of Malta’s Department of Conservation and Built Heritage in the Faculty for the Built Environment. This is the third year that the ENVIMAT summer school is being held, and the first time it is being held outside Italy.
