The Seismic Monitoring and Research Group (SMRG), Department of Geosciences, University of Malta, recorded a magnitude 3.8 earthquake on 17 August, at 12:52 local time.

The Malta Seismic Network has located the earthquake between Malta and Sicily, at about 40km from Malta. The earthquake was clearly felt mainly at locations to the north-east of Malta. A number of reports were submitted through the SMRG’s online questionnaire, reporting shaking, but no damage.
