The International Critical Pedagogy Reader (Routledge) was selected as one of the four 2016 Alpha Sigma Nu Book Award winners. This award is provided by this Jesuit organisation to honour academic achievements by scholars in Jesuit universities and colleges in the USA and elsewhere.
Professor Antonia Darder, who holds the endowed Leavey Chair at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, is the lead editor on this co - edited volume. The other two editors are Professor Peter Mayo of the University of Malta and Professor João Paraskeva of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. For those teaching critical education courses in international education or global studies education, this is a comprehensive collection with contributions from a variety of international authors including Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Paula Menesas and Zygmunt Bauman among many others. The publication won the award for the Humanities category.
This is Professor Mayo's third book award. In 2005 his Liberating Praxis book (Praeger 2004) won the Critics Choice award of the American Education Studies Association (AESA). In 2013 his co-authored book with Leona English, Learning with Adults - A Critical Pedagogical Introduction (Sense 2012) won the Cyril Houle Award of the American Association for Adult Continuing Education (AAACE ) for "outstanding literature in Adult Education."
