On 26 September, Professor Carmel J. Caruana, Head of the Medical Physics Department at the Faculty of Health Sciences participated at an international webinar entitled 'Preparing Medical Physicists for future leadership roles', hosted on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, Vienna) website.
Professor Caruana is a global leader on issues related to the profession and education in the area of Medical Physics. The medical physicist is a legally recognised healthcare profession and the presence of medical physicists at expert level (Medical Physics Experts) in hospitals is a legal requirement of EU Directive 2013/59/EURATOM.
The M.Sc. Medical Physics at the UM was the first in Europe to be harmonised according to the recommendations of the ‘European Guidelines on the Medical Physics Expert’.
The Department of Medical Physics within the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Department of Physics within the Faculty of Science are planning to launch a new innovative undergraduate inter-faculty degree in Physics, Medical Physics and Radiation Protection, giving students the opportunities of acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills for three professions within one degree programme.
