On 13 May 2019, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the University of Malta and the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali (known as LUISS), a private university based in Rome, Italy. The agreement extends the already healthy relationship between the two universities into other fields of cooperation, including joint degrees and staff and student exchange and mobility.
By means of its Progetto Mediterraneo, Luiss is offering full scholarships to allow selected undergraduate students from Mediterranean countries to study business at its Rome campus. Started in 2017, Progetto Mediterraneo is co-sponsored by LUISS University led by President Emma Marcegaglia and Fondazione Terzo Pilastro – Internazionale, led by Professor Emmanuele F. M. Emanuele, which has invested in the education of young people in difficulty from around the Mediterranean.
Anthea Aquilina is the first Maltese student to benefit from this scheme since 2017, and expressions of interest for more students to apply are now welcome. Anthea’s testimony is sure to encourage interested and motivated students to apply:
'Experiences like Progetto Mediterraneo, help students like us grow not only academically but in ways through which we move one step closer to becoming complete, independent and successful individuals. Just an hour’s flight away, the renowned LUISS University offers the perfect professional environment to flourish into the best version of yourself, while Progetto Mediterraneo provides a multicultural environment through which one can create bridges with different cultures, making us better world citizens and providing countless other benefits. An opportunity like this can be one of the most enriching, fulfilling and educationally stimulating experiences of your life; one should definitely not let it pass by.'
During their visit to Malta, the LUISS delegation met Acting Rector Prof. Ing. Saviour Zammit and Pro-Rector Prof. Godfrey Baldacchino, FEMA Dean Prof. Frank Bezzina, as well as Dr Philip von Brockdorff (Head, Department of Economics) and Dr Silvio Camilleri (Department of Banking and Finance).
