The MSc. in Mental Health Studies will be offered as a joint collaboration between the Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine & Surgery and Faculty for Social Well Being, at the University of Malta. The course programme will be structured along a three year timeframe, at a part time afternoon/evening structure. The course is for all professionals who wish to broaden their theoretical knowledge in a particular area as part of their ongoing professional development.
The course is open to warranted professionals in possession of a first cycle qualification or higher, awarded by this University or any other higher education institution recognised by Senate, obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) or equivalent, in any one of the following areas:
Communication Therapy, Counselling, Education, Medicine, Midwifery, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Psychiatric Nursing, Psychology, Psychotherapy, Social Work and Youth Work or any other area deemed suitable by the Board of Studies.
The course has common first and last years and a branched second year during which students have to choose to follow one of 3 branches, these being: Child & Adolescent OR Addictions OR Community Care, Rehabilitation and Long-term Recovery. A maximum number of 20 students shall be accepted for each cohort.
The course involves theoretical sessions and observational ones (namely in areas related to General/Acute psychiatry, Child & Adolescent services, Rehabilitation/Community services and Addictions). During the observational sessions, the students will not undertake any hands-on work but will observe the care being provided according to a set of pre-set objectives for each session.
