The University of Malta together with the Public Works Department organised a conference on Remote Sensing for Coastal Erosion on the 27 February 2023. The conference was held at the Aula Magna of the UM Valletta campus and included contributions mainly from a number of speakers related to the Coastal SAGE and SIPOBED projects, both funded by the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) through the Space Research Fund.
The event was opened by welcome speeches including Hon. Dr Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, Minister for Planning and Public Works, Prof. Alfred J. Vella, Rector of the University of Malta and Dr Michael Quinton, Executive (Space Engagement and Programmes) at MCST.
Both Coastal SAGE (led by Dr Ing Gianluca Valentino) and the SIPOBED project (led by Prof. Sebastiano D’Amico) are multidisciplinary projects involving the use of Earth Observation data, image processing and Artificial Intelligence techniques, and geophysical methods as well as in situ measurements to understand and tackle two specific local issues related to coastal erosion - the first project related to slow moving coastal landslides and the second related to movements of sediments within Maltese pocket beaches. Both projects involve a strong collaboration between the Department of Geosciences and the Department of Communications and Computer Engineering.
A recording of the event is available online.
Projects Coastal SAGE and SIPOBED are financed by the Malta Council for Science & Technology, for and on behalf of the Foundation for Science and Technology, through the Space Research Fund.
