An unprecedented amount of research is being carried out at the University of Malta (UM) across many areas, yet this research rarely gets the exposure it deserves. The University of Malta Research Expo 2023 (UMRE23) will be held on 17 May 2023. It aims to give UM researchers the opportunity to showcase their research activities to the wider UM community, to encourage the sharing and cross-pollination of ideas, and to celebrate the success we have achieved thus far.
Apart from highlighting the research being conducted by academics and researchers, UMRE23 will also incorporate the traditional Doctoral School Symposium - allowing us to also celebrate the up-and-coming research of doctoral students. The event will include sessions consisting of short pitches (5 minute presentation + 5 minute Q&A) and sessions in the traditional Doctoral Researchers Symposium format (15 minute presentation + 5 minute Q&A), available for presentation of work by MPhil/PhD/DMus/PharmD candidates only. A poster session (open to all applicants) will also be organised.
This year's keynote address will be given by Prof. Helle Merete Nordentoft (Aarhus University, Denmark) who will be talking about Collective Academic Supervision: Diversity as a driver for learning.
The call is now open for submissions for oral and poster contributions to be presented at UMRE23. You can submit your application by filling in the online form. The following information will be required during the application process:

Important Information for presenters
The call opened on 6 March 2023 and closes on 27 March 2023. Furthermore, the notification of acceptance will be sent by not later than 21 April 2023. The final programme for the event will be published on 28 April 2023, with registrations for the event opening on the same date.
Presenters may indicate a preference for an oral presentation or poster on the application form. However, the organising Committee will review the abstracts received and will decide on the final format of the delivery and the time-slot allocation of said delivery.
A notification of acceptance and the format of delivery will be sent to the corresponding authors via email. Contributors need to confirm acceptance of invitation to speak/present poster within three working days of notification of acceptance.
There will be two formats for oral presentations:
- presentations by academics and researchers must not be longer than 5 minutes (covering the research area, the current top line research findings, ongoing research projects, interest for new collaborations; etc)
- MPhil/PhD/DMus/PharmD students will have 15 minutes to present + 5 minutes for discussion
For all poster presentations, a specific time-frame will be allocated where presenters can showcase their poster and related research.
A number of the presentations/posters from UMRE23 will also be invited to be featured in a special edition of THINK! Magazine.
