The Library welcomes the 19th addition to Prof. Mario Buhagiar's special collection. This latest addition of 17 books and articles, focuses on religious art in Sicily and Southern Italy, with special focus on the Byzantine and Gothic periods.
The donation includes monographs by Salvatore Costanzo, Mario Tommaselli, B. Gilman Proske, and a catalogue of the Museo d'Arte Sacra (Basilica Santa Maria Assunta di Alcamo). We thank Prof. Buhagiar for his continued generosity and invite researchers to view the items in the Library's Archives and Rare Books Department.
What's new in Melitensia
Melitensia's book of the month – January 2025
Eclecticism and the Baroque Revival in the Decorative Arts in Malta: The context of Abramo Gatt (1863-1944) written by Mark Sagona and Anthony Gatt; published by Midsea Books.
This second volume in the scholarly series Studies in Central Mediterranean Decorative Arts focuses on the decorative arts of the Maltese Islands during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This period, which coincided with the peak of British colonial rule, saw the flourishing of Eclecticism and Baroque Revival styles in the decorative arts across Malta and Gozo. The book also commemorates Abramo Gatt (1863–1944), the islands' most talented native designer of the fin-de-siècle, on the eightieth anniversary of his death. Mark Sagona and Anthony Gatt's work thus provides readers with a contextualization of Abramo Gatt’s life, works, and artistic vision within both the local and international artistic scenes of his time.
The list of new Melitensia acquisitions is available online.
