The University of Malta proudly pays tribute to Professor Irene Sciriha on the occasion of her retirement, celebrating an exceptional academic journey marked by pioneering achievements, dedication, and transformative leadership.
Professor Sciriha holds a unique place in the University’s history.
As the first female Full Professor within the Faculty of Science, she broke new ground and opened doors for generations of women pursuing careers in STEM. She was also the first Maltese woman to earn both an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Mathematics, leading to influential research contributions in Graph Theory and Linear Algebra that have garnered international respect.
Her distinguished career, spanning over five remarkable decades since 1971, reflects her unwavering commitment to advancing mathematical research, fostering academic excellence, and nurturing countless students and scholars.
In 2021, Professor Sciriha was honoured with the Lifetime Award for Contribution to STEM, a testament to her enduring impact on the national and international scientific community, as well as her tireless efforts to promote gender equity in STEM fields.
As she retires, the University extends its heartfelt gratitude and deep appreciation for her extraordinary service. Professor Sciriha’s legacy as a pioneer, mentor, and inspiring role model will continue to shape and uplift future generations.
