UM Racing, Malta's only Formula student team, unveils EV26, carrying the Maltese flag to Silverstone this July

UM Racing, the University of Malta's Formula Student team, last night unveiled the EV26 at a launch ceremony held at the University of Malta Quadrangle.

The event brought together some of Malta's most distinguished figures, including University Rector Professor Alfred Vella, Rector-Elect Professor Frank Bezzina, and representatives of the Chamber of Engineers, alongside the team's sponsors and supporters.

The EV26 is UM Racing's latest electric race car and will compete at Formula Student UK at the iconic Silverstone Circuit from 14 to 20 July 2026, one of the world's most prestigious engineering competitions drawing over 100 universities from across the globe.

Founded in 2007, UM Racing has spent nearly two decades pushing the boundaries of what student engineering can achieve on this island. Last year, the team finished 9th overall at Formula Student UK 2025, marking Malta's first-ever international electric Formula Student entry.

The EV26 builds directly on that foundation, and represents a new benchmark for the team: for the first time in UM Racing's history, a complete race car was designed, engineered, and built within a single academic year.

The car you see tonight is only half the story. Behind it lie months of late nights, sleepless weekends, and the kind of quiet resilience that never makes it into a headline. Every member of this team carried that weight, and every single time they faced a wall, they found a way through it. Matthias Zammit, President, UM Racing

This season saw a record intake of new members, with nearly 60 students joining UM Racing at the start of the year. The current active team of 35 spans disciplines from mechanical and electrical engineering to business, digital media, and communications, reflecting the full scope of what it takes to bring a Formula Student car from concept to competition.

The team's ambitions at Silverstone are backed by a strong network of sponsors and institutional partners, whose support enables Maltese students to compete and represent their country on a genuinely global stage. UM Racing will compete at Formula Student UK from 14 to 20 July 2026 at Silverstone Circuit, United Kingdom.
