Event: Coding AI that Respects Equality and Fundamental Rights
Date: Friday 10 October 2025
Time: 10:00 - 16:45
Venue: Institute of Digital Games, 20 Triq L-Esperanto, Msida, Malta

During this workshop, the participants will develop processes for AI applications on a high level. Participants will be assigned to create an AI application in one specific area, such as Computer Vision, Computer Audition, Computer Linguistics, Robotics, Forecasting, Discovery, Planning, and/or Creation.
During this process, participants outline the code blocks and steps they would need to take and together with the workshop facilitators will analyse the ethical and fundamental rights implications of the various stages of their development. For example, a facial recognition system (falling under Computer Vision) that would be deployed in spaces offering retail services to instantly identify past shoplifters and alert security personnel would have several aspects that could severely impact fundamental rights, such as the right to liberty and security, the right to the presumption of innocence and the right of defence, and the respect for private and family life.
Due to time constraints, we will be working on an overall code-agnostic processing pipeline, therefore coding knowledge is not strictly required for the workshop. However, a thorough understanding of the coding process is strongly recommended.
Workshop is free to attend but registration is required online.
Workshop also counts towards the Professional Development hours required for Ph.D. students.
Coffee breaks and lunch are provided.
