Abstract:

Drawing on his research on small and peripheral communities, Prof Bjarnason will explore how geographical insularity intersects with physical and digital connectivity, shaping migration patterns, social capital, and regional development. The seminar will also reflect on emerging dynamics linked to artificial intelligence and their implications for island futures.

Bio:

Thoroddur Bjarnason is a sociology professor at University of Iceland, specialising in small and peripheral communities. His research examines connectivity, migration, and regional development, and explores links between artificial intelligence, social capital, and community dynamics through international research and publications.
