Medical Microwave Imaging (MWI) has been studied as a technique to aid breast cancer diagnosis. Several different prototypes have been proposed but most of them require the use of a coupling medium between the antennas and the body, in order to reduce skin backscattering. The use of air-operated setups has been proposed recently by several research groups. In this presentation, we present three studies towards the development of air-operated MWI systems, focused on the evaluation of refraction effects and on the advances of novel prototypes for breast and axillary imaging.
