4th WG2 Virtual Meeting: Needs for standardization in thermal therapies

Published on 15/01/2021

This meeting was organised by WG2 team: Marta Cavagnaro, Sergio Curto and Maarten Paulides and held online on the 11th January, 2021. The meeting focused on the needs for standardization in thermal therapies.

Almost 100 attendees witnessed the meeting. The first keynote talk was given by Kemal Sumser of Erasmus MC (Rotterdam, NL). He presented the upcoming ESHO 2021 Grand Challenge devoted to standardization of computational modeling and optimization in hyperthermia therapy. Next, Dr. Nevio Tosoratti overviewed the reporting criteria and the high need for standardization of numerical and experimental studies in microwave thermal ablation (MTA). The keynote section was finalized by Dr. Daniel Ortega whom mentioned the work of a previous COST action on standardization of nanoparticles in microwave thermal therapies. This talk not only provided the needs but also the necessity for standardization given the large differences observed in the measured heating rates at different clinics. After these presentations, the needs for standardization in hyperthermia, ablation and hyperthermia/ablation using magnetic nanoparticles were discussed in detail in three break-out groups.

All in all, we were very glad to see the high quality of the keynotes and discussions, as well as the fact that 97 attendees significantly contributed to the discussion in the break-out groups.
