Italian is offered at both Advanced and Intermediate levels.

The aim of these courses is to develop students’ comprehension and communication of Italian, developing skills such as speaking, listening, reading and writing. This is why all sessions are delivered in Italian and students are encouraged to use the language at all times.

To keep abreast with the contemporary language, lecturers recommend to students online articles taken from newspapers such as Il Corriere della Sera and La Repubblica, and stress the importance of reading contemporary authors to build up the necessary skills for discussion, essay writing as well as developing further their oral/aural skills.

Why study Italian?

Studying Italian at both Intermediate and Advanced Level serves as an excellent grounding knowledge for those students aiming to pursue their studies at university level in Humanities, Law, Education, Tourism, Translation and Interpretation, Media and Communication, as well as other disciplines.

The Intermediate Level Course

This course prepares students for the Malta Matriculation Intermediate Level examination in Italian. Besides emphasis on language, students are introduced to a contemporary author and are encouraged to participate actively with questions and discussions covering the various themes of their literature book.

Besides this, students are motivated to plan a short project / discussion on Italian culture related to geography, history, art, music, politics which they can present during their oral skills exams.

Students have three hours of lectures per week: two of the lectures are entirely dedicated to the development of the student’s fluency and accuracy in the language whereas the other lecture is dedicated to a study of a contemporary author leading to literary criticism skills. Whenever required students can make use of contact hours, where they can get individual attention from their tutors.

The Advanced Level Course

This course prepares students for the Malta Matriculation Advanced Level examination in Italian. Students choosing this course should preferably have a pass or better at SEC level or equivalent. Besides emphasis on language, students are introduced to various authors covering a period from the Middle Ages till modern times.

Students have five hours of lectures per week: three hours of literary appreciation and two hours of language seminars. They are also obliged to attend a tutorial each week covering both language themes as well as literature . Whenever required students can make use of contact hours, where they can get individual attention from their tutors.
