Abstract: During their 268-year sojourn in Malta, the various Grand Masters of the Order of St John donated a wealth of sacred vestments to St John’s, their Conventual Church. Two of the more spectacular sets of vestments are those donated by the Cotoner Grand Masters in the 1660s. They are particularly striking due to their extensive use of symbolism, an important artistic tool used during the Baroque period to educate, elevate and enthral.
