Abstract: The small Mediterranean islands of the Maltese archipelago are famous for their temples built between 3500 BC and 2500 BC, which are some of the earliest free-standing stone buildings in the world. These complex, lobed structures, with altars, doorways, and a great deal of decorated, carved stone, bear witness to the elaborate rituals and beliefs of prehistoric peoples.
