Abstract: Last September marked the centenary of the birth of one of the twentieth century’s most powerful social theorists and exponent of democratic education and social action – Paulo Reglus Neves Freire (1921-1997). His influence continues to be felt in various fields. Freire’s impact on pedagogy is well known but his influence is also strong in such areas as health work, social work, community development, cultural studies, communications, theology, philosophy, and sociology. Colonialism is a key aspect of Freire’s oeuvre.
