Abstract: SANDRO DEBONO describes one of a small number of Michelangelo Marulli's commissioned works for Malta which were produced in Rome. The artistic link between Malta and Rome developed through the importation into Malta of a number of exceptional works of art. Moreover, Maltese artists received their artistic formation in Rome and some, as in the case of Melchiorre Gafa (1636-1667), remained active there. A further artist is the painter Michelangelo Marulli, recently identified with the Maltese painter known as Michelangelo Maltese, active in Rome from the 1660s. Marulli's biography is largely unknown and his artistic activity in Rome unstudied.
