Ta’ Xbiex Palace : a social impact assessment

Abstract

This Social Impact Assessment (SIA) investigated the nature and extent of envisaged social impacts of the development proposed under the name of Ta' Xbiex Palace situated between Triq Testaferrata, Triq Enrico Mizzi, Triq Emmanuel Galizia in Ta' Xbiex, Malta (PA/02765/16). The study took place between July 2019 and September 2019. The study deployed a mixed-methods research design comprising a quantitative survey, qualitative semistructured interviews, and elite interviews. The survey was administered by telephone to a representative sample of 301 respondents residing in the identified area of interest, namely Ta’ Xbiex, Gżira and Msida. A total of 26 semi-structured interviews were conducted face-to-face with conveniently sampled passers-by encountered in Ta’ Xbiex, particularly in the streets close to the development site. These included residents as well as non-resident commuters, shoppers, business-owners and employees. A total of 3 elite interviews were conducted by phone or email with the incumbents of the positions of the Minority Leader of Ta’ Xbiex Local Council, the Mayor of Gżira Local Council and the Mayor of Msida Local Council at the time of the study.
