| Abstract: | This study embarks on a journey to investigate the perceptions of mental health professionals regarding psychological abuse experienced by young people, aiming to shed light on its profound repercussions. The research data was acquired through qualitative semi-structured interviews with six mental health professionals. Despite their diverse backgrounds, all participants have extensive experience dealing with young people. Among them were social workers, psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatric nurses, and counsellors, comprising five women and one man. The findings from the participants' narratives provide a rich tapestry of insights into the coping techniques used by victims of psychological abuse, revealing the complicated interplay between psychological suffering, physical health, and mental well-being. Furthermore, the study emphasises the persistent impact of psychological abuse on important aspects of identity formation, career paths, and life trajectories. Notably, participants openly acknowledged the dubious efficacy of therapy in eliminating the effects of psychological trauma. Instead, they emphasise its function in promoting more manageable coping skills for daily obstacles. While the primary focus of this research remains on understanding the lived experiences of psychological abuse of young people, recommendations for future research and policy are put forward to stimulate further inquiry and bridge the gap between research findings and actionable measures. This study contributes to a better understanding of psychological abuse among young people by emphasising the importance of collective action, acknowledging the resilience of young people, and advocating for ongoing assistance and recognition of their experiences. Finally, it depicts a world in which young individuals are heard, their emotions acknowledged, and their paths to healing illuminated. |
