Abstract: Most children worldwide acquire adult phonology and intelligible speech early and without needing speech intervention. However, there is still a proportion of children who are referred to the speech language pathologist/logopaedist/phoniatrician with the suspicion (and later confirmation) of a speech sound disorder (SSD). Children with SSD struggle with accurate speech production. SSD is nowadays used to cover different sub-types of speech disorder. McLeod and Baker (2017) define SSD as follows: “…. difficulties with speech production and perception that are not typical of the person’s age, cognitive ability, and language background” (McLeod and Baker, 2017, p. 579)
