Abstract: This study examines Maltese fishing activities by comparing the Maltese fishing industry with that of other countries which are similar in demographics, climate, and microeconomy. The research also analyses the similarities and differences between fishing methods to identify the difficulties faced by Maltese fishermen in relation to their counterparts. Therefore, this dissertation aims to answer the following research questions: • What are the indigenous fish species found in the Maltese archipelago and are these sustainable? • What are the challenges and limitations encountered by Maltese fishermen and how can these be rectified? Both quantitative and qualitative modes of research were used to answer these questions. These consisted of various interviews and questionnaires which were distributed to the people involved in the industry.
