Enhancing the visitor experience of young adults in Għar Dalam cave, museum, and garden

Abstract

Għar Dalam is one of the most prominent monuments in the island of Malta. The Għar Dalam site includes the natural waterworn cave, an adjoining two-roomed museum, and a garden. The complex is of great paleontological, speleological, geological, archaeological, ecological, and historical significance (Fabri and Cilia, 2007). The site is situated in a tranquil and naturally beautiful setting. Nonetheless, Għar Dalam fails to generate the level of interest that would be expected from such a unique and authentic site. In fact, it is rated an average of 3.5 out of 5 on TripAdvisor (TripAdvisor, 2021). Nowadays, museums are changing their approach by becoming more visitor-centred rather than collection-centred. In other words, they are focusing on satisfying their visitors. Therefore, a deeper understanding of the visitors’ experiences during museum visits is essential (Chan, 2009). In this research, we will attempt to probe into the visitor experience of young adults at Għar Dalam with the goal of enhancing it. We will also put forward suggestions and recommendations to address the interests, needs, and wants of this visitor demographic in relation to this monument. [excerpt]
