Abstract: Sexuality is central to the experience of being human. The dispersion of sexual knowledge and the expression of the diverse sexual attitudes and behaviour have changed through time. This study aimed to explore the sexual knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of students aged between 18 and 29, attending the University of Malta. This study also investigated how knowledge, attitudes and behaviour related to sex may be influenced by gender, religion and nationality. A quantitative approach was adopted to reach these objectives. A questionnaire was disseminated online to all University of Malta students, out of which 418 responded. Quantitative statistical tests, including the Chi-Square test, Friedman test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to analyse the data. Results showed that the internet is the most common resource accessed to learn about sexuality and sexual behaviour. Respondents reported misperceptions about condoms and sexually transmitted infections while a third were not aware of the sexual health services on offer in Malta. Findings indicated an association between gender and sources of information about sexuality and sexual behaviour, a relationship between participants’ perspective about being in love before intercourse and religion as well as a link between the relationship with partner during first sexual activity and nationality. Recommendations for more holistic sex education and better promotion of sexual health services are made.
