Abstract: This MFA in Digital Arts by Research explores the question: Can digital technical photography, technology, storytelling, and audience engagement techniques foster a genuine empathetic connection between a viewer and a painting undergoing conservation? Using a Practice-as-Research approach, I was inspired by personal experiences and a deep commitment to cultivating empathy through the integration of thematic elements and cutting-edge technology. This led to the creation of Missejt il-Qiegħ, an audio-visual performance shaped by continuous reflection and exploration, allowing for revisions as new technical and experiential insights emerged. At its core, Missejt il-Qiegħ offers a unique approach to art appreciation by focusing on the painting as the material object and puts aside the subject and the artist. Through a curated series of photographs, the project captures in these material objects human emotions and experiences, depicting the effects of time, such as ageing, alongside the impact of injury, confinement, and abuse. This narrative invites viewers to empathize with the artwork, truly understanding its feelings and perspective. To realize this vision, I employed advanced large scale DVLED display technology and borrowed storytelling and audience engagement techniques from various disciplines, creating an immersive audio-visual experience that encourages active participation. The project aims to give room for contemplation and experimentation, provoking thoughts, sharing knowledge and fostering a renewed appreciation for the power of empathy in artistic expression.
