Abstract: This theatrical adaptation of Hansel and Gretel reimagines the classic fairy tale through music, movement, multimedia, and symbolism. Blending live performance with projected video, dance, and narration, the play explores themes of poverty, abandonment, courage, and transformation. Alongside Hansel and Gretel’s journey through the forest and their encounter with the witch, the story introduces the figure of the Crow/Swan, a magical character who represents identity, resilience, and hope. Through moments of humour, darkness, and wonder, the production highlights the power of love, friendship, and self-belief in overcoming fear and adversity. Designed for young and family audiences, the play invites reflection on what it means to grow strong in difficult circumstances while remaining kind and compassionate. This script is an English translation by Isabelle Gatt of her original Maltese script Fil-Bosk tas-Saħħara, first performed at the National Theatre Trikki Trakki Youth Festival in 2018 at the Malta Visual and Performing Arts School (MVPA).
