Abstract: This theatrical adaptation of Hansel and Gretel reimagines the classic fairy tale through music, movement, multimedia, and symbolism. Blending live performance with projected video, dance, and narration, the play explores themes of poverty, abandonment, courage, and transformation. Alongside Hansel and Gretel’s journey through the forest and their encounter with the witch, the story introduces the figure of the Crow/Swan, a magical character representing identity, resilience, and hope.
Through moments of humour, darkness, and wonder, the production highlights the power of love, friendship, and self-belief in overcoming fear and adversity. Designed for young and family audiences, the play invites reflection on what it means to grow strong in difficult circumstances while remaining kind and compassionate.
The script, written in Maltese as Fil-Bosk tas-Saħħara, was first performed at the National Theatre Trikki Trakki Youth Festival in 2018 at the Malta Visual and Performing Arts School (MVPA). The performance lasts approximately 20 minutes, in line with the Trikki Trakki Festival format. It includes 8–9 speaking parts in addition to singers, musicians, and dancers, making it ideal for larger groups or classroom settings, ensuring every participant has a chance to shine. An English version of the script is also available.
